Optik’s DBL-X 250D – 35 mm Black & White Motion-Picture Emulsion (ISO 250/25°, 36 exp)

Optik’s DBL-X 250D is a hand-spooled version of the iconic Kodak Double-X 5222 motion-picture film, reconfigured for 35 mm still cameras. With an ISO indicator of 250/25°, the film is specially adapted for daylight shooting but handles a wide range of lighting conditions. The motion-picture origin gives this emulsion a unique character: strong blacks, expressive grain, and a filmic contrast curve.

Designed for photographers who appreciate rich texture, bold tonality and cinematic aesthetic, DBL-X 250D delivers a high-contrast, dramatic black & white look. Highlights are soft-to-medium; shadows fall away into deep, rich blacks without losing presence in mid-tones. The grain structure is pronounced but controlled, lending images a mood and authenticity that set this stock apart from standard still-camera B&W films.

Because this stock originates from freshly processed motion-picture rolls and is repurposed into still-camera cassettes, there may be slight variation between batches — a departure from typical still-film consistency, but part of its appeal for creative shooters wanting a distinctive look. The film’s strong contrast and grain reward thoughtful exposure and development: pushing or pulling can enhance character, and scanning produces files that respond well to shadow recovery and highlight control.

Optik’s DBL-X 250D is ideal for street, documentary, travel, and personal fine-art work where mood, texture and tonality matter. It’s especially suited to photography where the aesthetic of motion-picture B&W — with its grain, dynamic range and depth — is desired in a still-camera format.
